2008 Gaia Community Scholarship Responses [for a better place].

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony

Federico Fellini is pictured above.

What's your purpose?

I am willing to take an opportunity to experience Federico Fellini’s quote, “A different language is a different vision of life,” by studying foreign languages.

What do you love, and how do (or will) your actions demonstrate this?

I am an upcoming freshman at the University of Connecticut. I will be focused on a major in Middle Eastern Studies to pursue in a career with the government. I have previously taken four years in Spanish, three years of French, and my first year in Mandarin Chinese. Now, in my future college education, I will continue Mandarin Chinese and my first year of Arabic, the language of Darfur. The love of languages and the inspiration of Federico Fellini's quote have changed my heart in many ways. I am aware of the genocide occurring in Darfur and I take it to heart when I see innocent individuals suffering from a lack of daily meals, showers, and qualities of life that they should always have the opportunity to cherish. When I am finished with college, I will be able to utilize their language to help communicate and spread peace to these unique people. I would love to start a group and provide them with donated food and support. As I progress in my studies and in the future, I am also willing to teach teenagers the Arabic language and promote cultural awareness in high schools to cause a rising epidemic that could change a part of the world forever.

Darfur Genocide

My Ideal Job

My ideal job has always been to travel to foreign countries, utilizing my foreign language skills by helping their children with education and inspiration. The families will have support from my heart with generous donations and moral guidance to live a much happier life. If my days were in severe weather conditions, I would find many ways to help support them to get through the rough times. My family would have been left in America, but I believe that there’s always another family that I could influence the term, “quality time,” together. I would love to understand a culture by experiencing the reality of what happens on a daily basis, rather than to read articles from books or websites. When I became a Student Ambassador in my high school by traveling to Spain with a group of classmates, I knew this was my future ambition and I must go back to it as soon as I can. The beautiful architecture, the diversity walking around, and the ethnic food had my senses working as fast as a telephone company. I would love to experience what Federico Fellini’s inspirational quote was and I would further educate myself and others to experience that,
“A different language is a different vision of life.”

Anyone bilingual or multilingual? Perhaps, would like to be ....

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony
Hello. Hola. Bonjour. Ni hao. Marhaban. etc ... haha,

I am willing to communicate with any native speakers in any foreign language,
particularly in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic to help me utilize my foreign language skills.

If you are unable to do so, you may teach me a few phrases in your own language. If you're Italian, I could only say Mi chiamo Antonio and a few small, minor phrases. But I would love to
learn more of my own ethnic background [half].

If you would like to learn any, please allow me to help you and I may provide you very wonderful resources in further educating yourself a foreign language. I would love to promote world peace by doing so, and to help you influence others to do the same in cultural awareness in the world.

Please be aware of the years of classroom experience, so you understand my level of communcation:

Spanish       - 5 years in classroom - 4 levels in *academics
French          - 3 years in classrom   - 3 levels in *academics
M. Chinese  -  1 year in classroom  - 1 level in *academics
Arabic            - few night classes       - no current level in *academics

*Academics as in Spanish 4 Honors, French 3 Honors, and Mandarin Chinese 1

Thanks for your support.

Why did you learn soo many languages? Did you get awarded later?

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony

Ah yes, the most frequent of all F.A.Q.s. Well, in 7th grade, I started Spanish and continued my first year in 8th grade because it was at junior high level. My grades were higher than expected and my teacher had the impression that it was my first language. I was very confident in doing such great academic work, and continued to Spanish 2 the following year.

When I signed up for courses for my sophomore year, I made sure to continue to Spanish 3 and then try a challenge for myself with French 1. Sure enough, my first year again in a foreign language brought back memories. My grades were incredible and outstanding, or at least enough to be nominated Student of the Month for French 1. I was as astonished as my teachers were. Then, the following year was predictable. I had enrolled myself in Spanish 4 Honors, and French 2 Honors. Then, as a senior, this year was quite a shocker for many teachers. I enrolled myself in French 3 Honors and Mandarin Chinese 1. In June, I was awarded the Outstanding Six Year Student Award in World Language and the World Language Scholarship. I have received three best quality books with the French, Spanish and Chinese cultures along with that award as well.

Now, I am currently looking forward on my 5th language in Arabic. I have already taken night courses at Community College a few months ago and plan to attend the University of Connecticut to major in Middle Eastern Studies. This will help me become the individual I have been searching for within myself since the day when I was in 3rd grade, asking myself, “What am I going to be when I grow up.” I guess even if I knew, I think “international” would have been a toughie for me during a spelling bee. =]

Rumor or Gossip: Perfect Attendance for all 4 Years of HS?

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony

Haha, what do you think I am,

a nerd?

Duh! I DO have perfect attendance
for all four years of high school because
yes, I am a nerd! =]

I hope to get awarded for that as well,
and lately, I have inspired my nine year old
sister to do the same thing for fourth grade.

What is your relationship to touch?

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 11, 2008:

Cuddling. Ladies, you know. I love touching. If I didn't have that ability to use such an amazing sense, then I would not understand the concept of cuddling. Touching IS the language of the blind, the language of the mind, and where ever else you may place a word such as, “kind.” As long as you do not abuse the word, touching can be a fun ride of happiness for anyone. To touch is to feel, and without feel, you’re just missing out on a lot. Anyways, I could go on forever about this topic because I have a poetic, sensitive side and it could come out to attract females. It is 1:02 am here in Connecticut and ladies, if you would like more information, then I will be happy to finish later. =] Oh, yes, by the way ... if you care for a massage - read the bold, italic, and underlined words.

What would you say to the person you were one year ago?

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 24, 2007:

Just keep moving forward. You're going to get accepted to Uconn, even if you turn in the information an hour before the midnight deadline. Just keep getting through these rough times. You're going to be known for the Outstanding Six Year Student in World Language and a scholarship in world language will also be awarded. There's soo much more to say, but just remember, you're going to make it. Trust yourself. =]

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 18, 2007:

Challenge yourself. Dare yourself to hug a stranger. Someone you do not know. Trust me. You will have such great mixed emotions that are unexplainbly perfect. =]

What recent book or film have you been affected by?

Posted on Jun 12th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 12, 2008:

The most recent film that I have been affected by would have to be the one I watched this year in my Sociology class about the genocide in Darfur. That film is actually the reason why I am here. Please review my previous blog entries to understand this hurtful genocide and become aware of what is happening in the world. Then, act now and Save Darfur.

The most recent book that I have been affected by would have to be, "A Lesson Before Dying." It was a very inspirtational book and I am willing to read it again when I have the time this summer. The following is a picture:

What if Tony, you lost your sight. Would this change you?

Posted on Jun 13th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony

I am Tony. I was born for a reason. A reason to spread world peace by understanding the concepts of a foreign language, the culture that surrounds that particular language and the ability to utilize the language to native speakers to introduce the awareness and interest that continues to spread throughout America to their own communities from inspirational individual young human beings.

Would sight be an issue for me? If I lost my sight right now and could not see anything, I would not stop my ambitions. It does not take a person to just see the language but feel it physically and emotionally. And you know, I just thought about it. If I lost my ability to see, I would still continue to learn my first year in Arabic and my second year in Chinese in college. I would even start learning Braille and read Braille literature. Therefore, by loosing a sense, I gain a new language to adapt to.

My love for languages is not just to impress women but to influence culture to them that they have never experienced before. Then, they act on a disaster relief, such as in China, or an occurring genocide, such as Darfur, and understand that I would always be there for them for support and more encouragement.

I am Tony. I was born for a reason. I was born to act on Federico Fellini’s inspirational quote, “A different language is a different vision of life.

Go ahead. Take my sight. I will show all of you. I will still voice my opinions, teach young teens to do the same and continue world peace throughout the future years to come. [Ha, just yeah, don’t jinx it for me Tony, gosh… day after Friday the 13th  ... good job]

How do you respond to being alone?

Posted on Jun 14th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 14, 2008:

Well, you think about it...

Me
Me 2

You.
buddyicon

Aunt "What's Her Face" in a country
you never heard about before,
that always talks to you on the phone once a year
about her teenage high school years ....

We all were born,
unless you were a twin,
alone.

Remember these good old days,
let me refresh your memory.

Yeah, tell me about it. You only get happy
when you discover people.
But honestly, what do I do afterwards? When the people leave,
and I'm left alone? Well, it depends what mood I am in.
I love being alone, but I also love being in the presence
of other people. I still play with legos,
and watch tv by myself. But lately,
I have developed a motivation to learn
a foreign language when I am bored.

It's not just fun,
it's educational,
and mentally motivating.

But I still would want a significant other,
right beside me cuddling,
and studying the foreign language with me.

=D

I actually think I act deviant when I am both,
alone and with others. So, there isn't a negative side
to being alone. Oh well ... =]
Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

My Love

You know my love for languages,

Teach me a phrase.

You know my love for culture,

Let me live with you for several days.

I just want to make a change,

Globally around your eyes.

Maybe provide a foreign exchange,

A program that reduces those innocent cries.

Pass this around,

Hug every human being.

Make this profound,

Seeing is believing.

The suffering from the people,

That we never hear about.

Until they are murdered,

And that’s what it’s about.

We need to be aware,

Of the world around.

And we better act fast,

Before they wear down.

Pass this around,

Hug every human being.

Make this profound,

Seeing is believing.

Some people think it’s funny,

To let the water run.

But when Darfur’s in trouble,

They’re not having fun.

Some people think it’s easy,

To go to the grocery store.

But what they don’t realize,

Are the people they ignore.

Pass this around,

Hug every human being.

Make this profound,

Seeing is believing.

You know my love for languages,

Teach me for days.

You know my love for culture,

Let me help those who need our praise.

My other "About Me"

Posted on Jun 14th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony
I wake up every morning,
as a metro in the shower.
Before I go out,
I spike my hair in an hour!

I have perfect attendance,
4th year at my school.
I study Spanish, French, Chinese, and Arabic,
and some people think I'm a fool.

I'm a nerd that shops at H-C-O,
I buy lots of shirts whenever I go.
I own over 30, with phrases to read,
but no one can beat "Puta" indeed, indeed.

My age, my age, I'm far
from what you've probably seen!
I don't do drugs, I'm a virgin,
and did I mention - I'm already 18!
No I will not buy you smokes to take a drag,
nor will I buy Playgirl for you, the silly fag.

Personally, I like eskimo kisses,
but I'm not too fond about snow.
I like cuddling inside on love seats,
and butterfly kisses make me go,"woah!"

To me, sex talk is so health class!
So don't ask me if I WANT any ass!
I know I'm not going to get "some,"
of that you know,
because I personally don't want,
children to spend my dough!

My views, my views, I respect my life!
If I do want to get married,
I won't marry a trashy hoe for a wife!

Ok so you know me,
now let's be friends.

P.S.
I'm not Barney,
I don't like pretends.

People expressing themselves in languages other than English

Posted on Jun 19th, 2008 by Tony : International Philosopher Tony

Join Multilingual group.

The cultivator [Mike - not me] of this group has written this introduction:

This is a group (pod) for people who wish to express themselves in languages other than English. If Gaia is to be truly global, why should it be limited to English-speakers? A useful link can be found when you Translate here.

In theory there should be no limit to the number of languages in this pod but I shall start with French as it is a language I write reasonably well.

Please feel free to propose other languages to me, express yourself and let's be creative.
